Is there a better set of enemies in modern soccer than Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho?
The Spaniard and Portuguese managers continued their long-standing feud last week at the UEFA coaches summit when they clashed over – of all things – the length of grass on pitches.
According to the UK’s Express, Guardiola reportedly argued that the current length of 3cm was too long, that it should no exceed 1.5cm and that it should be watered before each match. A simple recipe, Guardiola said, to making the game quick and more beautiful.
To this, Mourinho is claimed to have countered: “Everyone has his style of play, which should be respected. Football can be spectacular in several ways.”
To which Guardiola then responded: “The beauty of football depends on the coach. It seems to me that Mourinho prefers the result to the spectacle. I know to him that’s all that matters.”
The spat reportedly ended there but was reignited by Mourinho on Wednesday when German publication Bildquoted him as saying the following: “If you enjoy what you’re doing, you don’t lose your hair. He’s got a bald head. Guardiola doesn’t enjoy football.”
A deep cut from Mourinho, there, and one that seems to imply guys like Arjen Robben and Wayne Rooneyhaven’t been enjoying their football for quite some time now.
In all seriousness, assuming these quotes are correct it’s abundantly clear that this feud has become downright outlandish. As fans we can only sit back, soak in the entertainment and hope that somehow the UEFA Champions League Gods match up Chelsea and Bayern in the Round of 16.
